The whole concept is mind boggling! The idea that Ernest Tidyman's Shaft could ever be converted to comic form seemed impossible. The fact that Shaft made in to the big screen in the early 70's wasn't that much of a stretch (the late 60's-early 70's were a much different time.) So in the overtly politically correct 2014, the dialog, the themes, the plotlines seem horribly out of place. And that is precisely why I love this book. David F. Walker doesn't appear to shy away from any of that. The only problem with the book is that it is a prequel to the Shaft we all know and love. So instead of getting full blown Richard Roundtree, moustache/sideburn wearing love machine, we get a younger less well established John Shaft. Perfect for a prequel but not the major bad*ss I was hoping for. Best additional feature, a soundtrack recommendation list to listen to while reading the comic. It works!
