Written by Mike Carey Art by Peter Gross Cover by Yuko Shimizu

“Carey and Gross perfectly capture the zeitgeist of our Harry Potter-obsessed-chaotic-apocalyptic-times with a depth and whimsy that makes me jealous, and I can't wait to read more of THE UNWRITTEN.” — Ed Brubaker In the India of the British Raj, young journalist and would-be novelist Rudyard Kipling gets an offer he can't refuse. It’s an offer that will catapult him to fame, fortune and inexorable destruction. The secret history of the Unwritten begins in this stand-alone story...

BONUS REVIEW by GARY OWENS

Carey and Gross, creators of the book, gambled by scribing about Nobel Prize winner Rudyard Kipling in first person. Gutsy, to be sure, yet highly successful. A quick summary: Rudyard yearns for literary success, and is offered nothing, really, but to be published. Sounds safe, right? If you thought about the issue as a one-shot, it was remarkable. Firm arwork, telling fables through the middle, with a dash of old-school mystery, as the antagonists try to accomplish…what, exactly? Excellent issue overall, and I wonder how it will be carried forward. Score one for Vertigo.

I give it 10 out of 10 Grahams
